diabetes in pregnancy
Diabetes during pregnancy—including type 1, type 2, or gestational
diabetes—can negatively affect the health of women and their babies. For women
with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, high blood sugar around the time of conception increases babies' risk
of birth defects, stillbirth, and preterm birth.
Symptoms of
gestational diabetes
·
increased thirst.
·
needing to pee more
often than usual.
·
a dry mouth.
·
tiredness.
·
blurred eyesight.
·
genital itching or
thrush.
Most of the time, gestational diabetes doesn't cause noticeable signs or
symptoms. Increased thirst and more-frequent urination are possible symptoms.
Pregnancy diabetes
start:
This is called contra-insulin effect, which usually
begins about 20 to 24 weeks into the pregnancy. As the placenta grows, more of
these hormones are produced, and the risk of insulin resistance becomes
greater.
Is 160 blood sugar high in pregnancy:
A blood sugar level of 190 milligrams per deciliter
(mg/dL), or 10.6 millimoles per liter (mmol/L), indicates gestational diabetes. A blood sugar level
below 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is usually considered within the standard range on
a glucose challenge test, although this may vary by clinic or lab.
Most doctors and nurses consider your blood
sugar level in the screening test to be high if it is above 130 to 140 mg/dL
(7.2 to 7.7 mmol/L). If your blood sugar level is very high (≥200 mg/dL [11.1
mmol/L]), there is a very strong chance that you have gestational diabetes.
Can a diabetic mom
have a healthy baby?
If a woman with diabetes keeps her blood sugar well
controlled before and during pregnancy, she can increase her chances of having
a healthy baby.
Controlling blood sugar also reduces the chance that a woman will develop
common problems of diabetes, or that the problems will get worse during
pregnancy.
